Mindfulness in a Tea Bowl: Turning Life’s Struggles Into Strength

In Asia, people love to talk about old empires, like the Tang or Qing dynasty. It is much like how people in the West love to talk about the Roman Empire. These stories feel exciting and romantic. Movies and TV shows have made us feel this way for a long time.

But today, we will not talk about history. We will talk about a famous Chinese TV show: The Yongzheng Dynasty. Almost everyone in China knows this show.

Image :This man worked hard for more than ten years. When he learned he was the new emperor, he got ready to walk into the palace. Outside, his face looked completely calm and cold. Inside, he felt very excited. In that quick moment, he made one big, dark decision: get rid of the old people who knew about his past.

The Moment of Success

The most popular video clip online is a very simple moment. Prince Yongzheng learns that he will become the new emperor. He turns around and walks out the front door. This single moment shows that his twelve years of hiding and waiting finally paid off. Now, he holds the highest power in the land.

In this scene, the show plays a low, deep, traditional song. The way he turns his body, together with this music, became very famous online. People have watched it hundreds of millions of times.

I think this happens because everyone loves stories about success. We especially love success that comes after a long, hard struggle. When you suffer for many years and finally see the light, you feel deeply proud.

A Quiet Cup of Tea

So, when I watch this show again, I like to make a cup of my favorite tea: Xinyang Maojian green tea. At times like this, I always use a gaiwan (a traditional tea bowl with a lid). It helps me think. It gives me a beautiful, calm feeling.

With a gaiwan, I can look down at the tea from above, and I see our own lives in it.

Our First Steps in the World

The dry tea leaves fall into the bowl. They make a sharp little sound. Isn’t that just like our first day in the working world? We are young. We are fresh. We feel ready to do great things.

Then, hot water pours over our heads. We are innocent and unprepared. Before we can even think, the world pulls us in. We choke. We struggle. But soon, we learn that fighting blindly does not help.

We have to change our thinking. We put our big dreams away for a moment and accept reality as it is. We push hard through the heavy water, and little by little, we find our own speed.

Showing Our True Value

It is very tiring. But slowly, we start to show our true value: a beautiful color, a good smell, a nice taste, and a graceful shape. The world finally starts to notice us. And this kind of success lasts for a long time.

Looking back, our early struggles were not just painful. They were a meaningful test that made us who we are today.

This is when we finally grow up. We still want good things in life, but now we can also face unfair situations without running away. Facing them does not mean giving up. It is a smart choice. Sometimes, we must accept things first, so we can have the strength to change them later. This is simply how life works.

Changing the Water

In the end, we lose our worried thoughts. We become grounded, just like these tea leaves. We stop chasing the moving water. Instead, we sink calmly to the bottom of the bowl.

The hot water never expected this. It wanted to change us. But in the end, we accepted the water—and we changed the water instead. This is the quiet wisdom of a single tea leaf.

So in these quiet moments, after I finish my tea, I hold the warm bowl in my hands. I take a moment to look back at my life. I feel thankful for what life has given me. And somehow, by the next morning, I feel full of energy again, ready for a new day.

Do you ever feel this way too?
